【開催趣旨】

近年、日本においては少子高齢化や持続可能なまちづくりの観点で、「ウォーカブルなまちづくり」が全国的に推進されており、研究分野でも徒歩や自転車、ウォーカビリティといったキーワードのもと、主要な研究テーマとして注目されつつあります。

この度、ロンドン交通局（Transport for London）でグレーターロンドンのWalking & Cycling政策推進に従事され、ロンドンの自転車ネットワーク開発、Healthy Streetsツールの設計と測定基準の策定やHealthy Streetsによるテスト等に貢献されてきたDominic Cherry氏が来日されることとなりました。

この機会に、Cherry氏を東京大学へお招きし、これまで手掛けて来られたプロジェクトの考え方、社会課題の解決に如何にして向き合い、困難を克服し推進してこられたかをご教示いただくとともに、質疑・討論を通じて、これからの日本における徒歩や自転車による交通の推進に係る示唆を得ることを目的とします。

【Introduction】

In recent years, “walkable cities” have been promoted all over Japan in order to respond to perspectives of the declining birthrate and aging population and for sustainable urban development. This concept is becoming a prominent research theme under the keywords of walking, cycling, and walkability.

Mr. Cherry, who has worked on promoting policies for walking and cycling in Greater London at Transport for London since 2006, contributed towards the design of the Healthy Streets tool, working with Brian Deegan and Lucy Saunders in 2016. He worked on developing its metrics and helped test the Healthy Streets Check on the proposed pedestrianization of Oxford Street and the wider cycling programme he was working on at that time.

We would like to invite Mr. Cherry to the University of Tokyo to share his philosophy on the projects he has handled, how he has faced and overcome challenges in solving social issues, and to discuss and gather insights on promoting walking and cycling transportation in Japan in the future.
